Our smile is a very important part of our expression and it can have a huge impact on our self-confidence. 1 in 4 adults avoids smiling because they feel embarrassed about the appearance of their teeth and mouth. At Acorn Dental Practice, we want all our clients to feel comfortable in their skin and that’s why we provide cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics to straighten your teeth and enhance your smile!

When considering cosmetic dentistry that straightens the teeth, there are two main options - traditional braces and Invisalign. Each type of orthodontic treatment brings different positives and negatives, so choosing the right option is essential!

Read on to learn more about the pros and cons of Invisalign and traditional braces.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces involve metal brackets glued to the front of the teeth with an adhesive, there are some options for braces to be placed behind the teeth, and connected by wire. This type of brace needs periodic tightening every few months to gradually straighten the teeth and align the jaw.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a newer form of orthodontic dental treatment that uses plastic aligners to manipulate the teeth. The aligners are customised for each patient by creating a  3D scan of the teeth. A set of aligners is 3D printed from the scans to move the teeth in small steps over time.

Aesthetics

Traditional braces are more noticeable since they involve metal wire and plastic. However, they are also more customisable, the colour of the plastic bands can be chosen from a selection and changed each time your braces are adjusted.

On the other hand, Invisalign is virtually invisible since the aligners are made of clear plastic. This may be an important factor for some individuals if it makes them feel more confident.

Eating

Patients with traditional braces need to take more care while eating or drinking. Also, it’s recommended to avoid hard or sticky foods that could dislodge or break a bracket and would need timely repair.

Alternatively, Invisalign is designed to be worn consistently but should be taken out to eat, drink and brush teeth. This means that Invisalign patients don’t have to worry about what they eat or drink.

Teeth Cleaning

As traditional braces are fixed throughout the teeth straightening process, cleaning and flossing between teeth may be difficult and careful cleaning is required to prevent any damage to the brace. However, during the final treatment session when the braces are removed, you can have your teeth professionally cleaned to remove any build-up in hard-to-reach areas.

Since Invisalign involves removable aligners, it’s taken out to brush the teeth. Therefore, it’s easier to ensure that teeth are adequately cleaned throughout the orthodontic treatment to prevent any staining or build-up of plaque.
