How Teeth Whitening Works
We begin with a consultation to check that whitening is suitable for you and to discuss the shade you are hoping to achieve. We will take impressions of your teeth to create custom-fitted whitening trays that fit closely and comfortably.
You will be given professional whitening gel to use with your trays, usually worn for a short period each day over one to two weeks, so you can fit treatment around your daily routine. We will guide you through the process and check in with you to see how your teeth are responding.
In-practice whitening is also available for a faster result if you prefer, and we can talk you through which option is likely to suit you best at your consultation.
Is Teeth Whitening Right for You?
Teeth whitening works best on natural tooth enamel, so it will not change the colour of existing crowns, veneers or white fillings. If you have these restorations at the front of your mouth, we will talk you through what result you can realistically expect.
Whitening is not suitable for everyone, including pregnant or breastfeeding women, and it may not be recommended if you have untreated tooth decay or gum disease. Some patients experience mild, temporary sensitivity during treatment, which we will help you manage.

Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes, when carried out under professional supervision, teeth whitening is a safe and well-established cosmetic treatment. We will check your teeth and gums beforehand to make sure whitening is appropriate for you, and give you clear instructions on how to use your whitening gel safely at home.
Will whitening damage my enamel?
Professional teeth whitening, carried out correctly, does not damage healthy tooth enamel. We use professional-strength gel at a controlled concentration and monitor your progress, which is safer than unregulated products sometimes sold online.
Can I have teeth whitening if I have crowns or fillings?
Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, so it will not lighten the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings. If these are visible when you smile, we can discuss options to help even out your smile once your natural teeth have been whitened.
Will my teeth be sensitive afterwards?
Some patients notice mild, temporary sensitivity to hot or cold during or shortly after whitening. This usually settles within a day or two. If sensitivity is a concern for you, please let us know beforehand so we can adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
Am I suitable for teeth whitening?
Most patients with healthy teeth and gums are suitable for whitening. It is not usually recommended for anyone under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, or for patients with untreated decay or gum disease. We will check your suitability during a consultation before starting treatment.
Can I whiten my teeth if I am pregnant?
We do not recommend teeth whitening during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as a precaution rather than because of any known specific risk. It is best to wait until afterwards, and we would be happy to discuss your options at that time.
